– Good afternoon, dear friends!

We are glad to see you here.

Today my English lover-students are going to tell you about wonderful winter customs. They are about Christmas and New Years Day.

– Approximately 2008 years ago Jesus Christ was born. Historians are not quite sure about the date. Many Romans became Christians. Later all countries of Europe accepted Christianity and began to celebrate this day. Now it is the most important family holiday in Great Britain, America and other countries.

December, 24)

– Christmas Eve is on the 24th of December. On this day everybody is very busy and in a hurry. Offices, banks, schools and colleges close between Christmas and New Years Day. People stay at home and spend the time with their families. Everyone wants to buy Christmas presents for their friends.

– Every family tries to have a Christmas tree which is decorated with coloured lights. Grown-ups put presents under the Christmas tree.

Children hang their Christmas stockings in front of the fireplace.

They are for presents. Little kids believe that when they are asleep Santa Claus comes to visit them with a big bag of toys.

Donna, Donna)

Good night, Liz!

Night, Chris!

Have nice dreams!

DONNA, DONNA

On a wagon bound for market,

there`s a calf with a mournful eye,

High above him there`s a swallow

winging swiftly through the sky.

How the winds are laughing,

they laugh with all their might,

Laugh and laugh the whole day through,

and half the summer`s night

Donna, Donna, Donna,

Donna, Donna, Don – (2)

` Stop complaining,` said the farmer,

`Who told you a calf to be,

Why don`t you have wings to fly with,

like the swallow so proud and free?`

How the winds are laughing,

they laugh with all their might,

Laugh and laugh the whole day through,

and half the summer`s night.

Donna, Donna, Donna,

Donna, Donna, Don – (2)

Calves are easily bound and slaughtered,

never knowing the reason why,

But whoever treasures freedom,

Like the swallow has learned to fly,

How the winds are laughing,

they laugh with all their might,

Laugh and laugh the whole day through,

and half the summer`s night.

Donna, Donna, Donna,

Donna, Donna, Don – (2)

– Oh, how hard the day was! Im so tired! Look! Theyre sleeping so sweetly!. . I want to sleep, too But I cant! I must go! Now where am I? Whats the address? What are their names? Ive forgot! Let me see.

– (достаёт письмо) He is Liz and she is Chris. Oh, no! She is Liz and he is Chris. Aha, a car is for Liz and a doll is for Chris. Oh, no! A car is for Chris and a doll is for Liz. Yes! (раскладывает подарки в носки) Good-bye, kids! Have a good time! Merry Christmas!

Liz: – What a nice dream it was! Hes sent me a toy, my little doll! He is so kind and nice

Chris: – But who? Who are you talking about?

Liz: – Santa Claus, of course!

Chris: – Yes, look! Its a car, its for me?! Liz, it couldnt be a dream!

Liz, Chris: – Mummy, Daddy!!!

– Merry Christmas!

sually the whole family has a big Christmas dinner. The traditional meal for this day is a roast turkey and Christmas pudding. Before Christmas meal they say a prayer:

(склонив голову, слушают молитву)

– We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds towards each other. Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

– After breakfast the grown-ups go to church but the children will be playing with their new toys. Some of them go to the theatres to watch the plays.

Three Little Kittens

– Three little kittens lost their mittens,

And they began to cry:

– Oh, Mother dear, we very much fear

That we have lost our mittens.

– What! Lost your mittens, youre naughty kittens!

Then you will have no pie.

Miee-ow, miee-ow, no pie.

– The three little kittens have found their mittens.

And they began to cry:

– Oh, Mother dear, see here, see here,

See we have found our mittens.

– Oh, youre good kittens!

Put on your mittens

And you will have some pie.

But I smell a rat close by.

Good-bye!

– But we smell a rat close by.

Good-bye!

– What is this poster for? What is it?

– Its a donkey. And theres a tail. The person must pin the tail on the donkey. But its not so easy because you cannot see. You have a scarf over your eyes. The boys and girls can help the person saying yes or no. Are their any volunteers?

– Children like to listen to poems

Jack Frost

Jack Frost! He comes a-creeping.

Jack Frost! He comes a-peeping.

He nips at your fingers.

He nips at your nose.

He nips at your knees.

And he nips at your toes.

When his hands on you hell lay

Then its time you ran away.

– Children also like to guess the riddles.

1. This is the season

When mornings are dark.

And birds do not sing

In the woods and the park.

This is the season

When children ski

And Father Frost

Brings the New Year Tree

(winter)

2. There are 12 brothers

Who march in single file,

But never overtake one another.

(12 months)

3. He comes at night

(or so they say!)

Then does his job

And go away.

(Santa Claus)

4. What man cannot live

Inside the house?

(a snowman)

5. It is white

It is cold.

You can ski on it.

What is it?

(snow)

– Some children like the puzzles. There is one of them. Who knows the ABC? You can see English letters. If you call all letters in a proper way and connect them youll get a picture.

– Traditionally Christmas parties are gay and full of songs. Auld Lang Syne by Robert Burns is very popular.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

And never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

And days of lang syne.

Chorus:

For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne.

Well take a cup of kindness yet

For auld lang syne.

– The English people like to send and receive Christmas cards. As the matter of fact the 1st printed Christmas card appeared in 1842 in London. People say Merry Christmas to each other.

Two chairs by the fire

On Christmas Day,

With old grand people

In every way.

But its just one wish

A loving one, too

With a special greeting

To all of you!

– Children are fond of making crackers for this day. They write jokes on paper for kids and wishes for grown-ups. They put it inside of the crackers.

Dear guests! Our party is over. New Year is coming with your winter holidays.

Happy New Year).

Happy New Year

No more champagne

And the fireworks are through

Here we are? Me and you

Felling lost and feeling blue

Its the end of the party

And the morning seems so grey

So unlike yesterday

Nows the time for us to say

Refrain:

Happy New Year

Happy New Year

May we all have a vision now and then

Of a world where every neighbour is a friend

Happy New Year

Happy New Year

May we all have our hopes, our will to try

If we dont, we might as well lay down and die

You and I

Sometimes I see

How the brave new world arrives

And I see how it thrives

In the ashes of our lives

Oh yes, man is a fool

And he thinks hell be OK

Dragging on, feet of clay

Never knowing hes astray

Keeps on going anyway

(Refrain)

Seems to me now

That the dreams we had before

Are all dead, nothing more

That confetti on the floor

Its the end of a decade

In another ten years time

Who can say what well find

What lies waiting down the line

In the end of eighty-nine

– Thanks for your coming. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you!
